Las bicicletas eléctricas

The electric bikes

You don’t know how much I wanted to talk about this activity in the blog. There has been almost a year that in Hermigua there opened a company dedicated exclusively to the rental of mountain and electric bikes. This company, Telemaco Rent a Bike offers also bicycle guided tours in Hermigua and in Garajonay National Park.

Whoever that has visited La Gomera is aware of the impressive slopes that you have to climb either by foot or with the car, let’s not mention a bicycle. And there is where the good news start. Because electric bicycles are from now on my favorite means of transportation around La Gomera. That you have to climb a hill? No worries, just turn the engine on and keep pedalling as relaxed as in a beach stroll. Because of course, the reason I am able to finally write this article is because Nando, the owner, had the kindness of letting me do a little tour with one of his bikes. And let’s be clear, I am not a fan of bicycles at all, in fact, I have made more kilometers in an exercise bicycle than any other kind.

En la ruta de Hermigua

As I was saying, this springtime I put on my sportswoman costume (not fooling anybody) and I reached the Tasca Telemaco to enjoy my private tour stage with trick. The route we made lasted around 1 hour, and took us through many of the most-known spots of Hermigua. The routes are carefully chosen to seen the most interesting spots in the village and the surroundings with low occupancy roads and a fair amount of viewpoints. Of course, we did the short version of the proposed Hermigua tour, that is 3 hours long and reaches both sides of Hermigua Valley.

The pro’s of going around in an electric bike are many. Fist of all, it is basically effortless. The motor takes charge of all the slopes. Second, it is invigorating. Not only do you make some touristic sightseeing, but you are also feeling soo healthy. Third, it is the perfect combination of speed and sightseeing. The bike doesn’t have the limitations of a car, neither does it imply hours of strenuous walk. You can see and photograph panorama that you have ever been able to watch before. Fourth, you are feeling so good that you cannot stop smiling, waving good-bye and chatting. It is a perfect cure for stress and exhaustion. Fifth, no need to be a biking fan. Anybody can enjoy it. So, what are you waiting for?

Telemaco Rent a Bike proposes several routes with electric bike: Hermigua, Agulo and La Caleta Beach. In any case, the end is a day of fun for everyone and a great photo album. You can see the information in:

While in one of my usual virtual tours in search of new information for the blog, I finally found some promising information. There is a new – at least for me, as I didn’t know it before – guided tours company that is also settled in Hermigua. Although the company is newly settled, it’s owner, Ricardo Tomé, is a veteran guide that has worked for years as an official guide to the National Park. Luckyly for us, he seems to have emancipated, and so we have this brand-new but experienced company that delivers tailor-made tours around the island.

Here is a brief presentation he has in his website:

“Welcome to La Gomera,  the walking paradise. My name is Ricardo Tomé. After working in the National Park I now make private walking tours in the best places of the island where I was born. All walks are à la carte, according to your interest (flora, fauna, local customs) and also your fitness.

You will see the best places and will have more time to enjoy the  sun and the sea.

LA GOMERA with its lush forests, the breathtaking ravines, and the green valleys was made for the hiker. Come with me to discover with each step exceptional landscapes that take us back to other times. Landscapes sculpted by the sea, such as its steep and massive cliffs, or aged  by the passing of centuries, as in the Garajonay National Park, declared by UNESCO as the Property of Humanity. A vestige of the Tertiary period, Garajonay is a forest where one can become acquainted with the history of the world. Prehistoric vegetation, nurtured by the waters of its many springs, awaiting the traveller who enters its magic. I will show you the best routes for exploring the attractive features of this National Park. But there’s more on the island. I will lead you  through an  abundance of paths and tracks which will take us over an intricate terrain, through small villages, ravines or terraced agricultural land. Palm tree covered valleys embracing small but attractive beaches or the incredible image of Mount Teide – lying majestically in the distance, on the neighbouring island  of Tenerife – could be a perfect ending for an unforgettable excursion.”

With that introduction, it shows he knows his business.

One of the most important events of La Gomera’s cultural agenda are the San Marcos bonfires, lit on the 24th of April. This traditional celebration – both religious and a tribute to male spirit (sporting for fun, so well-known nowadays) – is located in Agulo.

For more information on the event, you can visit the Town Council website (spanish version only): http://agulo.org/apli/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=76&Itemid=45

Terraza - El Silbo

Terraza - El Silbo

I have been delaying this moment, don’t know why, I guess because it is quite hard to introduce something you like so much without raising too much expectations, as this has been our favourite gathering place since I was a teen. It is a place that we all associate with summertime, drinks, friends, partying… Like we say in Spanish, ‘if walls could talk…’.

It has been open for more than 20 years, and it has become a mandatory gathering place for everyone, from kids to elders. The crowd is quite varied, as you can see grannies, parents, singles, teens and kids. It is quite an example of peaceful collaboration, and all seem to have fun with their respective groups. If you happen to be around in Summertime, you cannot miss the Anniversary party, usually being celebrated around the 15th of August. It has been traditionally a hawaiian party. Last year’s theme was the “white party”. I’m sure this year’s theme is still open to suggestions.

But it isn’t all about the bar. It’s restaurant has a special charm. It’s not just that they have the best beef sirloin in the island (my favourite, with moustard sauce), but also crunchy original pizzas and a large menu of local dishes.

Good service, good company and good kitchen are the trademarks of the place.

Address: Carretera General 102 (Hermigua, La Gomera)
Tel: +34 922 880 304
Opening hours: From 13 to 16 &  19 to 23 h. All weekdays.
Price: 15 to 25 €/person.

Thanks to my attendance to some tourism fairs this month, I’ve learned what worries most to the rural lodgings owners: the activities. I mean, of course, when your house is stuck in an endless plain (quite charming, I think, anyways), you might really worry about the lack of organised activites. I have ever been too worried about that. Who wouldn’t know what to do in a small island with dozens of beaches, forests, mounts and many other natural and man-made attractions?

Even so, just because of you (my public, wherever you are), I have made some research. I found, among others, a company that works mainly with that, giving some order to your vacations. I remain sceptic with the organized tourism, a vacation full of visits and group events. I think we need some freedom, to find our own rythm and stick to it. But sometimes tours can give us this new perspective about the destination we are in.

If you have read carefully, you will be aware that is not only this company I’ve found. But I’m gonna tell you only about this one because, on an island lacking sometimes profesionalism, experience and a nice website, this company just has it all! And it is only 1 Km away from Hermigua! This company is called “Luipe Tours”. They make organized tours of one day or half a day through diverse areas of the island. The most original I found are the mountainbike ones, and the milkyway watching trips, with a specialist to tell you about constellations and that. Don’t they sound appealing? To me, too. Who knows? Maybe I join someday.

So here, their website and other contact details, so you can meet
