The economic life of Hermigua is mainly based on agriculture and rural tourism. First there was the sugar cane, then the piglet, the grapevine and the banana, fundamental cultivation of the municipality generating a great amount of the richness of the village.
Hermigua is the most extensive village of the island, it extends from El Cedro until Playa de Hermigua. Connected through the road, the old routes and paths have survived. During centuries those paths were the only possibility to access the valleys.
The village is divided into two small nuclei, concentrated around their churches. Along the whole road, nevertheless, we can find infinity of stores and houses, forming a line almost continuing from the beginning to the end.
